BlogHer 2011: A Man’s Take on the Largest Female Blogging Conference

On Aug. 4, more than 3,000 bloggers from across the globe – mostly female, but a handful of men, including myself – converged on the San Diego Convention Center for BlogHer 2011. The draw: two full days of expert blogging tips, daily BlogHer parties, swag galore and, most importantly, the opportunity to get your blog – your personal brand – in front of the eyes of hundreds of name-brand companies and blogs who look for bloggers to help promote their brand.

There’s a lot that goes into planning for BlogHer and other similar blogger conferences. How to prepare is the topic of many bloggers leading up to these events. Topics range from who to meet, to how to dress, to blogger party etiquette. But to really take full advantage of the conference, bloggers need to prepare for and identify how they can stand out to the big-name companies and blogs among the thousands of other bloggers in attendance.

This was the goal of #Print4BlogHer, an 8-week program developed by the highly influential blogger Debba Haupert from Girlfriendology.com and presented by The UPS Store. It helped bloggers learn how to think strategically about marketing themselves and their blogs to companies and other blogs at BlogHer. Each week, Debba and five other bloggers shared their expertise with participants on topics like branding, marketing, strategy and goals, as well as more tactical topics like writing, designing, proofing and printing materials (e.g, business cards, info sheets and media kits).

Here are 10 tips and insights I gained from the weekly lessons:

  1. All blogs are a brand.
  2. Be sure to stick with what your brand represents.
  3. Set goals for your blog/brand.
  4. Have a set strategy for reaching your goals.
  5. Your goals help define the type of research you need to do.
  6. Discover with whom you need to connect to meet your goals.
  7. Focus on the top tier of your target connections.
  8. Grease the wheels with your targets several days before the event.
  9. Figure out what materials and messages will best promote you and your goals.
  10. Read and re-read your materials again and again.

And at the end of the program, all the #Print4BlogHer participants met up at The UPS Store center in the Hilton Bayfront San Diego to celebrate a successful BlogHer preparation program. They had the opportunity to meet Debba and the five ambassadors, as well as The UPS Store franchisees Jim and Lynn Miller, and share their experiences. You can check out some fabulous photos of the event by Sandy Jenney from OrganizewithSandy.com.

A special thanks to the five #Print4BlogHer ambassadors:

So while BlogHer 2011 has come and gone, the tips shared in #Print4Blogher are helpful for many other blogger conferences held throughout the year. And, hey, it’s never too early to start preparing for BlogHer 2012!
